· Aerobic exercise - Aerobic exercise causes growth in BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which is a protein that helps us pay attention and increases neuroplasticity. Aerobic exercise also improves cerebral blood flow, providing
oxygen and nutrients.
· Meditation – those that meditate regularly have more developed pre-frontal cortex which is associated with increased problem solving, focus, attention and emotional regulation.
· Sleep – sleep is required for neural plastic changes to “grow” in. For example, that is why babies require more sleep. Sleep encourages learning retention through the growth of the dendritic spines that act as connections between neurons and help transfer information across cells. Sleep deprivation can affect these neural connections.
· Nutrition – foods high in essential fatty acids and intermittent fasting are said to stimulate neurogenesis.
· Relationships – healthy relationships help brain cells grow and develop.
· Novelty – learning new things or undertaking new activities causes growth in BDNF.
